It is located about 12 kilometres north of the town of Whakatane. A whaling station existed on the island during the 19th century. The 1.43 sq km island is a remnant of a complex volcano which has eroded, leaving two peaks. This is still an area of volcanic activity and there are hot springs on the island. It is located on the Firth of Thames close to the mouth of the Waihou River. East of Thames township is the extensively logged and regenerating native forest of the Kauaeranga Valley. Taumarunui is situated on the north bank of the upper reaches of the Wanganui River at its junction with the Ongarue River in central North Island, New Zealand. It was originally a Maori settlement at the junction of important canoe routes linking the interior of the island with the lower Wanganui River settlements. Certain localities in the neighbourhood, notably the valley of the Pungapunga Stream, which joins the upper Wanganui near Manunui, were celebrated for the size and quality of totara, and large canoes were built there.
